Free calculators for knitting, crochet and quilting

Work out how much yarn or fabric to buy before you start. No sign-up, works in inches or centimetres, and every number comes with the assumptions behind it.

Quick answers

  • A worsted-weight throw blanket (50 × 60 in) takes about 2,820 yards knitted, or 3,000 yards crocheted.
  • A queen quilt (90 × 95 in) needs 8.25 yards of standard cotton for the backing, pieced from 3 panels.
  • The same queen quilt needs 10 binding strips cut across the width of fabric; see the binding calculator for other sizes.

Where the numbers come from

The yarn estimates are not rules of thumb: they are the median yardage per square inch from 2,681 knitted and crocheted blanket patterns published on Ravelry, grouped by craft and yarn weight, with the typical range shown next to every result. Blanket and quilt sizes follow standard US bed and blanket dimensions. The quilting calculators use the usable fabric widths and margins that quilt shops and longarm quilters work with, and each calculator lists its assumptions so you can adjust them.
